Discuss the genre of a speech and how MLK reaches his ‘purpose.’

Materials Needed: Students, respect, clip, belief statement handout. Preparation:Bring materials, cue clip. Introduction:Good morning English 9.As always, we will start with an entry in your ‘Intolerance Journals.’Today, we have Group 3 who is researching, __.They will begin their discussion now. Presentation: (60 minute class) Activity 1 (20 minutes) 1.Group 3 will take the floor and present an artifact. 2.They will also provide open-ended questions on the artifact and their research to begin a discussion. Activity 2 (25 minutes) 1.Watch “I Have a Dream Speech” 2.Discuss:What was MLKs purpose?Why was a speech the best form for that?Was it?Was his purpose met? How does this relate to the Three Blind Mice activity we did last week? How does this relate to your Multi-genre research project? Can you give me examples of how you are using Form= Audience + Purpose in your project? Activity 3 (15 minutes) 1.In conjunction with MLK’s speech, I will have students create ‘belief’ statements about how they wish to be treated or hope to treat others with tolerance. 2.This activity will continue the next day.We will post the belief statements about the room to add to our community. If time permits: Students will continue their belief statements, finish Night, or work in their groups. Assessment:I will assess students on their participation in the discussion about speech as a genre and their own uses of different genres in their research project. Assignment:Students should finish reading Night, writing in their ‘Intolerance Journal,’ continue researching, and bring their belief statements tomorrow.
